SSIMA is an international event to bring people working in MedTech (assisting clinical experts with modern healthcare technology) up-to-date with world-class speakers (see the CVs on this page). A clear focus is on Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning.
- For researchers, PhD students and MSc students: a dedicated SSIMA:Tech track, with dedicated tutorial lectures, and much interaction with the speakers. This is an ideal opportunity to get up-to-date, get and exchange new ideas with colleagues and find new collaboration partners.
- For radiologists and other clinical experts: a dedicated SSIMA:Med track, with tutorial lectures on applications, critical performance issues and legal issues.
- For companies and start-ups: a dedicated day with pitches, hands-on demos, head-hunting and exploring commercial opportunities.
We expect around 200 participants, coming from all over the world. The week is informal. It is not a conference, but a school, with emphasis on deep understanding, and mixing the three target groups, as interdisciplinary is what gives new ideas. The setting in the charming old downtown of Bucharest gives ample opportunities for lively discussions and brainstorms in the evenings.
Day I: SSIMA 2019 starts with a full-day masterclass on Deep Learning: what is it, how does it work, and how can I build and deploy it? Lecturer is prof. Bart Romeny, EMBS distinguished lecturer, a gifted tutor with multiple awards for his teaching. This masterclass touches the holy grail of neural nets: a grip on the internal workings (so we can speed up the training), and how are they related to what we know of human vision? The morning is for everyone, the afternoon for SSIMA:Tech.
Day II: The second and third day in SSIMA:Tech are core-business tutorials on current hot topics, as quantitative tumor imaging (prof Ovidiu Andronesi-Harvard Medical School), computational modeling (prof Alex Frangi- Unievrsity of Leeds), MRI (prof Nikola Stykov -Polytecnique Montreal) and optical techniques (prof. Stefan Carp -Harvard Medical School), deep learning (prof Laurent Cohen -CEREMADE Dauphine Paris), big data (prof George Verghese -MIT) and unsupervised training (prof Marius Leordeanu, winner of the “Grigore Moisil” Prize), programming AI with TensorFlow (Alex Vasilescu, UCLA and CTO of TensorVision) and computational advertising (Dr. Andrei Broder, Google Mountain View, previously vice president of Yahoo!). A lecture on financing start-ups and infrastructure will be given by the serial entrepreneur and managing partner at CrestaFund, Palo Alto, George Haber.
Day III. The second and third day in SSIMA:Med is filled with critical lectures, discussions and hands-on sessions on AI and medical data, statistics (Prof. Peter Meer -Rutgers University), legal matters (prof Nahum Kityati -Tel Aviv University), and a range of practical applications is presented, as segmentation, robotics (Alon Wolf -Technion IIT and founder of Medrobotics) and population imaging (Wiro Niessen -Erasmus MC, CEO Quantib). Several lectures are given for both tracks.
Day IV: The Thursday is dedicated to the non-trivial interactions and mutual benefits of the medical and engineering communities. Three famous speakers (profs. Alex Frangi, Wiro Niessen and Dave Hawkes), who built large-scale (>50 fte) institutes of MedTech engineers, in hospitals tell about their pioneering steps and what led to the success. Special hands-on sessions/demos give clear possibilities of the power of AI in Healthcare today. Many high level policymakers will give an address, such as dr. Cristian Grasu, Secretary of State for Healthcare in Romania and the ambassadors of Israel and the US. Many applications are presented, in radiotherapy (Nikos Paragios CEO of TheraPanacea and prof at CentralSupelec), and by companies (Philips, GE, Quantib, Qmenta, DeePathology.ai, TheraPanacea and others).
This Summer School, organized in partnership with University Politehnica of Bucharest, “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Technion Israel Institute of Technology and Eindhoven University of Technology, is the largest and highest level of its kind in Eastern Europe, and with MICCAI endorsement, EuSoMII support, the speakers with their longstanding experience, high-level policy makers and the participants of different professional backgrounds will engage in a fruitful week of exchanging ideas, explore collaborations, and enjoy visionary speeches.
The gala-dinner on Thursday evening is held in the beautiful classical mansion of the Romanian Academy of Sciences, Restaurant Casa Oamenilor de Stiinta.
As during this week the famous George Enescu Festival is held in Bucharest, we are happy that Camerata Regala will give us a dedicated performance before and during the dinner. Not to be missed!
